This indicates that not only do coaches internally believe that they can accurately perceive emotion, but that observers externally recognize this through coaches’ behavior. It has been suggested that one of the main mechanisms through which coaches’ influence performance is by perceiving athletes’ emotion (Chan & Mallett, Citation2011; Potrac et al., Citation2017). Indeed, if a coach can perceive that a situation is having an adverse emotional impact on an athlete, they can then actively modify the situation to change the emotional response. For example, an athlete may interpret competitive anxiety as having either a facultative or debilitative effect on performance, and coaches who are able to accurately perceive this will then be able to appropriately support performance (Kavussanu et al., Citation2014). Therefore, being sensitive to athletes needs and emotions will be an advantageous coaching characteristic.

We’ve identified at least two opportunities where we can invite key stakeholders from clubs and The FA to our sessions. We want to ensure learning is spread as far as possible so these are opportunities to learn more about the work the group is undertaking, make connections and discuss the future for the women’s game.In 2015, the Society of Health and Physical Educators of America (SHAPE America) launched 50 Million StrongTM with goals of improving physical literacy, increasing physical activity levels, and encouraging lifelong physical activity among children by the year 2029. Not only are youth sports programs crucial to meeting 50 Million StrongTM goals, but it also requires the purposeful efforts of sport coaches, program administrators, researchers, coach educators, and coach developers. While it is encouraging that research on sport coaching topics appears to be growing, there is still much to learn about how to prepare coaches to provide quality sport experiences for their athletes. Consequently, to further this call, it is crucial to understand the current state of sports coaching research and propose future research needs in the discipline. The purpose of this paper is to identify research needs in sports coaching and coach education/development that assists in achieving the 50 Million StrongTM goals of SHAPE America. Throughout the paper, critical research questions are identified in two main areas: 1) coaches’ roles in developing physically literate athletes, and 2) developing coaches in regards to coach learning, the efficacy of coach education, and coach health and well-being. Furthermore, commensurate with other papers in the series commissioned by the SHAPE America Research Consortium, we discuss these areas within a social ecological model to understand the impact of the bi-directional interactions between environmental factors and individual behaviors. It was on the solid foundation of the NCC and NCACE and in response to the growing international development of the field of professionalism in coaching and sports coach education development lead by the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE), that the United States Center for Coaching Excellence (USCCE) was able to grow on August 2016. With the support of SHAPE America, the USCCE also took on the responsibilities associated with accreditation efforts in coaching education as NCACE became a standing committee within our organization.
