About this deal

I thought this was a good mystery. I wasn't sure who the killer was until pretty close to the reveal so good on the author. These folks are not private investigators but still investigate crimes. Not sure how much that would actually work in the real world, but this is fiction, right? The mix of character's lives stories and them working the case was a good balance. Each character has their own stuff going on in life (except maybe Lizzie, her thing is Philip's thing). We did get a setup for another book especially with Moira's character's storyline. Since this is the first of a series it suffers from this need to set the scene in book one. On the basis of this initial novel I would say another episode would be welcome and read with some anticipation.

The person that she’s being paid to hunt is someone that she knows, too. That makes it all the more difficult. JT was a mentor to Lori and he was the one who showed her the ropes in the first place. He taught her how to be a bounty hunter– and also knows quite a bit about her clouded past. JT taught her how to bounty hunt– and now he’s a fugitive and her next target.Death at Paradise Palms by Steph Broadribb is the second book in the Retired Detectives Club, featuring four retired residents of The Homestead Retirement Community in Florida. It’s an exceptionally entertaining read that is mostly cozy, yet a solid whodunit. The premise is probably a little far-fetched, but the novel is pure escapism, so I tried not to overthink the practicality of retired folks (albeit all former law enforcement) gallivanting about after armed, murderous kidnappers. As well as catching up with old friends and new, I took at trip to the brilliant independent bookstore – Imagined Things – in the centre of Harrogate and signed a few books. It’s a lovely shop, staffed by fabulous people, and I strongly recommend a visit at any time of the year.

Death on the beach is the third title in The Retired Detectives Club series and I think it’s the best one yet each book improves on the previous one. Honestly I was drawn to this thanks to Richard Osman and his entertaining set of books with a similar premise. Was this as good? No. Was it entertaining? Absolutely. Can Moira and the gang find Cody before it’s too late? Or will this case see them lose in more ways than one? This makes for compelling storytelling, it's great to see flawed characters battling with their flaws—but it's a good thing they're all retired because this is the kind of thing that should hurt a career. Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read this cozy mystery prior to publication in exchange for an honest review.

Crime investigation novels are a hit or a miss for me, but I really enjoyed this one. It's the perfect balance of investigation and procedure mixed with real time drama from the characters' own lives. It almost felt like a Florida version of Blue Bloods, one of my favorite shows of all time. The senior investigating detective assigned to the case immediately writes it off as a suicide. The other is - silent. This book is an all round easy read that is reminiscent of Death In Paradise, Murder She Wrote or Columbo – all of which I love by the way. I’m looking forward to a book three. A great escape that doesn’t take itself too seriously and isn’t too dark. Luxury retirement condos in Florida - a realtor falls off a penthouse balcony in advance of an open house. Or was she pushed? The team must put aside their differences and join forces with a former adversary if they’re to solve the case. But in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, can they lure the killer into the open before one of them pays the ultimate price?" Sehr sympathisch.Potential suspects and alibis aren't clear cut so a dangerous trap is set - putting one of the team members at risk in a dramatic reveal and takedown. I absolutely loved every bit of this story. Be it the writing, the mystery behind the kidnapping, the excitement and tension of finding Cody before it is too late, suspense, character development (Moira's was the best!) and plot to story development - absolutely Fantabulous! For me, this year has been an emotional rollercoaster. I’ve moved house – an interesting process during a time earlier in the year when we had more Covid-related restrictions in place – but well worth it. I’ve also, like so many people over the past eighteen months, experienced the sudden loss of a close family member. We’re offered a simple missing person case at the start when a former Hollywood star, Olivia Hamilton Zeigler, hires the retired detectives to find her missing husband Cory. But when Oliva receives a ransom demand, the case turns into a kidnapping case. Still, the team stays on the case since Olivia doesn’t rust trust the police and refuses to involve the authorities. Broadribb’s writing and characterization are incredibly engaging and the reader feels as if they are as involved in the case as the cast.
